On the eve of the Millennium New Year, through a glass rectangle, the young Benjamin observes the gently moving waters of a swimming pool where bodies pass each other oblivious to his gaze, slowly, like a dream that penetrates him. Suddenly something invades the blue window. Everything happens as fast as the change that will soon come over him. In a state of confusion and disorientation, he leaves the small hotel where he is staying with friends in Buzios, a resort town situated in the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and crashes his car in an event that affects his memory and ability to move. In the fight to help their son recover from the damage, Benjamin’s parents come across blanks in a memory that is out of reach, like a remote island, in an eternal present. As the narrative unfolds, memory and actuality interweave, and it becomes apparent that Benjamin’s present state is the result of a different accident, one that involves older stories, deeper passions. Love, betrayal, guilt and hope combine and surprise in a moving novel about identity and redemption.
