The novel follows Judith’s path of hardship, as she emigrates to Brazil from Palestine at the end of World War I. Using literary delicacy, without sacrificing historical rigour, Adriana Armony presents three distinctive moments in Judith’s life – first as a young girl living in Palestine, and later in Além Paraíba, a town in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais near the border with Rio de Janeiro State, where we find her struggling with children of her own, her Jewish Palestinian husband, and a forbidden Brazilian affair of the heart. The third and final part of the novel takes the reader back to the opening pages, to a Judith now elderly, widowed and ill, living her last days in Rio de Janeiro City. Judith in the Future Land speaks of the human strength to survive and adapt to radically new realities. |

In Nelson’s Hunger, Adriana Armony re-invents and expands on a famous episode in the life of the internationally acclaimed, late Brazilian playwright, Nelson Rodrigues. As a young man, Nelson had spent some time in a sanatorium in Campos do Jordão, a town situated in the high hills of São Paulo State. There, surrounded by men as sick as himself, in the flesh as much as in the soul, Nelson nurses and heals the heartbreak caused by his Rio de Janeiro lover, Eros Volúsia. In Armony’s novel, a Dostoyesvskian and suspect narrator tells how Nelson writes his very first stage play in this ‘house of death’, sublimating his sickness into art, and creating, with striking compassion, the gallery of tragicomic characters that made him so famous and loved in Brazil and abroad.
